What we test during the visit, and what goes to an outside lab
Most testing happens while you are still in the exam room. A provider listens to what brought you in, examines you and picks the tests that fit. These are done on site as part of the same visit:
- Rapid strep test for a sudden, painful sore throat
- Rapid flu test
- Rapid COVID test
- Urinalysis, a check of a urine sample, for burning or other urinary symptoms
- EKG (electrocardiogram), a recording of your heart’s electrical signals
Blood work goes to an outside lab
Your sample is collected in our clinic, and an outside lab does the analysis. If the provider also wants an image, our X-ray runs every day we are open. We do not have CT or MRI. Our main lab testing and EKG page explains each test in more detail.

Getting a blood test near Naperville starts with a provider visit
In Illinois, a blood test needs a clinician’s request, so at our clinic the provider you see is the one who orders it. The Illinois Clinical Laboratories Code says a clinical lab may examine specimens only at the request of listed professionals, such as physicians, physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses. Patients are not on that list, apart from a narrow blood alcohol exception.
Here, you walk in, describe what is going on, and the provider decides which tests make sense. If blood work is part of the plan, it is drawn before you leave. If you already have a lab order from your own doctor, call (630) 914-5373 before you drive over and ask whether we can draw it.

Thyroid blood tests and what they measure
A thyroid check usually starts with a TSH blood test, and if a provider orders one at your visit, we collect the sample here and the outside lab runs it. TSH stands for thyroid stimulating hormone. According to MedlinePlus, a TSH level that is too high or too low can be a sign that the thyroid is making too little or too much hormone, but the test cannot show why.
Common reasons for a TSH test include lasting tiredness, weight gain or loss you can’t explain, feeling unusually cold or hot, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or a swelling at the front of the neck. List every medicine you take for the provider, since MedlinePlus says some may need a pause before the test, but stop one only if you’re told to. An abnormal TSH usually leads to more thyroid blood tests to find the cause.

Need a lab test or EKG this week?
Walk-ins are welcome any day, or reserve a spot online before you head over from Naperville.
Should you fast before blood work?
Fast only if the provider tells you to, because some common blood tests need it and many others don’t. MedlinePlus names blood sugar tests, cholesterol panels and the basic metabolic panel as tests that often call for a fast, usually 8 to 12 hours. During that time, plain water is fine. Coffee, juice, soda and chewing gum are not.
Ask about your usual medicines, too. If you think your visit may include a fasting test, coming in the morning lets most of the fast happen while you sleep, and we open at 8 AM every day. Drink water beforehand, since being well hydrated makes the draw easier, and bring a snack for the drive home in case you feel lightheaded.
Rapid tests on Naperville weekends and evenings
You can get a rapid strep, flu or COVID test any day of the week, Saturday and Sunday included. We’re open 8 AM to 8 PM and walk-ins are welcome. The tests run during your visit, so the result is part of the same appointment.
Ask the provider which kind of rapid COVID test you had. For antigen tests, the CDC says a positive result is reliable, but these tests miss some infections, and the FDA advises a second test 48 hours later for someone with symptoms whose first result is negative. Our pages on strep throat and COVID-19 describe the symptoms of each.

Questions and answers
Questions we hear often
Still not sure? Call (630) 914-5373 and we will help you decide.
Can I walk in for a blood test near Naperville?
Yes. Walk-ins are welcome any day at our Bolingbrook clinic, open 8 AM to 8 PM and about 18 minutes from downtown Naperville, or you can save your spot online. A provider sees you first and orders the tests that fit, because Illinois labs need a licensed clinician’s request for most tests. Blood is collected at the clinic and tested by an outside lab.
Is there a blood lab open on Sunday?
Yes. We’re open Sunday from 8 AM to 8 PM, walk-ins welcome, and can draw blood that day if a provider orders it. We are not a stand-alone lab, so Sunday samples go to an outside lab like weekday ones. EKGs, urinalysis and rapid tests happen during the visit.
Can you draw blood for an order from my own doctor?
Please call (630) 914-5373 before you come and ask about your order. A short call can save you the drive from Naperville. If you walk in without an order, the provider you see decides which tests make sense and orders them during the visit.
How soon will I get my lab results?
It depends on the test. Anything run in the exam room, such as an EKG, urinalysis or a rapid strep, flu or COVID test, is handled within the same visit. Blood is analyzed by an outside lab, so those results come later, and how much later depends on the test. Ask before you leave how you’ll hear about them, or call (630) 914-5373.
Does urgent care do EKGs?
Ours does. An EKG is done on site when the provider wants to look at your heart rhythm, for example with palpitations or dizziness. Chest pain, pressure or shortness of breath that could be a heart attack is different: call 911 right away.
Do you offer COVID testing for Naperville residents?
Yes. Rapid COVID tests are done during the visit, any day we are open, including weekends. If the rapid test is an antigen test, a negative result does not always rule out COVID. With symptoms and a negative antigen result, the FDA advises testing again 48 hours later, as the CDC explains.
Is Pioneer Physicians in Naperville?
No. We have one clinic, at 148 S Bolingbrook Dr in Bolingbrook, IL. It is about 18 minutes from downtown Naperville by Washington Street, 75th Street and IL 53, and about 17 minutes from the 95th Street area in south Naperville. There is no Naperville office.
