Where can I get an EKG near Downers Grove?

Our Bolingbrook clinic does EKGs for walk-in patients seven days a week, no appointment required. The EKG is part of an urgent care visit. You tell a provider what is going on, such as a racing heartbeat, dizziness or shortness of breath, and the EKG adds a recording of your heart rhythm to the exam.

An electrocardiogram records the electrical signals your heart makes each time it beats. According to MedlinePlus, the recording is over within a few minutes. You lie still on an exam table, and a few small sensors that stick to the skin of your chest, arms and legs pick up those signals. The machine only listens. It does not send any electricity into your body.

MedlinePlus also points out that EKGs are mainly for people with heart symptoms or a known heart condition. They are not generally used to screen people who feel well, unless their risk is higher than normal. For a general heart checkup, start with your regular doctor. Our main lab tests and EKG page lists every test we do in Bolingbrook.

Cardiology tests near Downers Grove, and which one we do

The EKG is the heart test we do here. MedlinePlus calls a regular EKG a snapshot of a very short window, so a heartbeat problem that only shows up now and then may not appear on it. When that happens, or when an EKG shows something worth a closer look, your doctor or a cardiologist may order a more detailed test.

NHLBI’s guide to heart tests describes the common ones. Most are done or arranged through a doctor’s office, an imaging center or a hospital:

  • Stress test: you walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike, or take a medicine that makes your heart work harder, while your heart is monitored.
  • Echocardiogram: sound waves create moving pictures that show the size and shape of your heart and how well it pumps.
  • Holter or event monitor: a small portable EKG you wear for long periods during your normal day to catch rhythm changes.
  • Cardiac CT scan: a CT scanner builds detailed pictures of the heart and its blood vessels. We do not have CT.

EKG and lab tests near Downers Grove, done during your visit

Several tests are done here during the visit, so the result can shape your treatment before you head home. The clinic also takes X-rays in the building on every day it is open, when a provider needs an image of a bone or your chest. Our X-ray page for Downers Grove patients has the details. We do not have CT or MRI.

Blood is drawn here too, but an outside lab does that testing. These are the tests we complete on site:

  • Rapid strep test, when a sore throat might be strep throat
  • Rapid flu test
  • COVID test
  • Urinalysis, which can help check for a urinary tract infection
  • EKG

Blood work near Downers Grove, drawn here and sent out

We draw blood at the clinic, and an outside lab runs the tests. That means blood results do not come back during the visit the way a rapid strep result does. Before you leave, ask how and when you will get your results.

Some blood tests need an empty stomach. MedlinePlus explains fasting as having nothing but plain water, usually for 8 to 12 hours, with no gum, smoking or exercise during that time. Blood sugar (glucose) tests, cholesterol tests (a lipid panel) and the basic metabolic panel often call for fasting. Ask the provider whether your usual medicines are fine to take beforehand, and do not stop any of them unless you are told to.

Rapid strep tests for Downers Grove kids

We treat children at every age, infants through teens, and a sore throat visit can include a rapid strep test. MedlinePlus notes that strep throat can happen at any age but is seen most often in children 5 to 15 years old. For Downers Grove families, that covers the Grade School District 58 years and the first years at Downers Grove North or South, the two District 99 high schools.

A rapid strep test checks a throat swab for strep. MedlinePlus explains that when a rapid test is negative but strep still seems likely, a provider may order a throat culture, which takes 24 to 48 hours to return results.

Questions and answers

Questions we hear often

Still not sure? Call (630) 914-5373 and we will help you decide.

Can I walk in for an EKG without an appointment?

Yes. Walk-ins are welcome every day, including Saturday and Sunday, and we’re open 8 AM to 8 PM. The EKG is done during an urgent care visit, so a provider hears about your symptoms first. To choose a time instead, book online before you leave Downers Grove.

Is there a cheap ECG test near Downers Grove?

We do not publish prices. With insurance, your share of the bill is set by your policy. Call to confirm your specific plan. If you pay yourself, the bill is the urgent care visit plus the EKG and any other tests ordered. Ask for current self-pay pricing at (630) 914-5373 before the 16-minute trip.

Can you draw blood for a lab order from my own doctor?

Please phone (630) 914-5373 and ask. We draw blood during visits here and an outside lab tests it, but whether we can take an order written by another doctor needs to be confirmed first, so you do not make the 16-minute drive for nothing.

Can I walk in for a blood pressure check?

Call (630) 914-5373 to ask about a stand-alone blood pressure check. If you are coming in for symptoms such as a headache, dizziness or a racing heart, tell the provider about any high readings you have had at home. If a high reading comes with chest pain, shortness of breath or feeling faint, call 911.

Do you offer STD testing for Downers Grove patients?

Yes. Confidential STI testing is available here for common infections. A few results are back the same day. Others need an outside lab. Insurance works once you call to confirm your specific plan, and self-pay is an option too. Our STD testing page for Downers Grove patients walks through how the visit works.

Is any lab open near me on the weekend?

Yes. Weekend hours are the same as weekday hours, 8 AM to 8 PM, and walk-ins are welcome on Saturday and Sunday. Rapid tests, urinalysis and the EKG happen while you are here, and blood is drawn for an outside lab. We are not open 24 hours.

What should I bring for an EKG or lab test?

Have your insurance card and photo ID ready, or plan on self-pay. Also write down every medicine and supplement you take and bring the list, since MedlinePlus says some medicines can affect EKG results. Do not stop any medicine before the visit unless a provider has told you to.
