How far the clinic is from Downers Grove

From downtown, the drive is about 9 miles and takes around 16 minutes. One direct route leaves the Main Street area on Maple Avenue and Belmont Road, then uses 63rd Street to reach Hobson Road in Woodridge. From there, IL 53 heads south and becomes Bolingbrook Drive.

The south end of the village is closer. From 75th Street and Lemont Road, the route runs down Lemont Road to I-55 and exits at Bolingbrook Drive, roughly 7 miles and 13 minutes. Rush hour can stretch either trip, so allow extra time on weekday evenings.

Woodridge, which the downtown route crosses, is about 11 minutes out; see our Woodridge service area page. The Downers Grove service area page lists everything else we treat.

How common STIs are in DuPage County

Common enough that screening makes sense for many adults who feel well. For DuPage County, home to Downers Grove, the latest Illinois Department of Public Health breakdown covers 2022. That year, IDPH recorded 2,427 chlamydia cases in DuPage, plus 548 cases of gonorrhea and 50 of early syphilis.

DuPage’s chlamydia rate, 264.7 per 100,000 residents, was less than half the statewide 557.8. That is still thousands of diagnoses a year, counting only infections that were tested for and reported. The CDC points out that many STIs cause no symptoms, and that almost half of all new infections in the United States in 2018 were among people ages 15 to 24.

Who should get STD screening, and how often

It depends on your age, partners and history; a provider can match the guidelines to you. According to MedlinePlus, experts recommend yearly chlamydia and gonorrhea tests for sexually active women under 25. From age 25 on, women should test after starting with a new partner, while having several partners, or when a partner has been diagnosed with an STI. Men who have sex with men should get HIV, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea tests at least once a year.

Adults who have sex without a condom and have more than one partner should test regularly, and MedlinePlus suggests any sexually active person consider a yearly HIV test. Don’t assume a physical covered it: the CDC notes that not every checkup includes STI testing, and unless you asked for it, you can’t assume you were tested.

What happens when you come in for testing

You speak with a provider in private, then give whatever samples your tests call for. Bring a photo ID, plus your insurance card unless you are paying yourself. Expect questions about symptoms, recent partners and your last test; straight answers lead to the right tests.

The sample depends on the infection. According to MedlinePlus on STI tests, urine works for chlamydia and trichomoniasis, a swab from the affected area is used for infections such as gonorrhea and herpes, and blood is used for syphilis and HIV. When a test needs blood, we draw it here and an outside lab runs it. Women may be asked to avoid douching or vaginal creams for 24 hours before a urine or swab test.

When your results come back

Some tests give an answer before you leave. Others are processed by an outside lab and come back later. Before you head home, find out which results are coming today and how the others will reach you. If there is one phone number you want us to use, give it at check-in.

A positive result comes with next steps from the provider. Partners matter too: MedlinePlus warns that a partner who isn’t treated can infect you again, so recent partners should also get tested and, if needed, treated.

How Illinois law protects your STD test records

Your results are part of a confidential medical record, and Illinois adds its own layer of protection for STI information. The Illinois Sexually Transmitted Infection Control Act says programs dealing with these infections should give patients privacy, confidentiality and dignity.

The same law requires a clinician who diagnoses an STI, and any lab with a positive result, to report it to public health within two weeks at most; that is where the DuPage counts above come from. Under the Act, those health department records are strictly confidential and exempt from public records requests, with narrow exceptions such as your consent. Public health staff may interview people with an infection to trace its spread, and that information is protected too.

Why untreated chlamydia and gonorrhea are a problem

Left alone, they can spread to the uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). MedlinePlus on PID says chlamydia or gonorrhea is behind most cases, and about 1 in 8 sexually active women will have PID before age 20. It can develop with mild symptoms or none, and its scarring can lead to long-term pelvic pain, infertility and ectopic pregnancy, a pregnancy outside the uterus that MedlinePlus says puts the mother’s life in danger.

Lower belly pain, fever, unusual discharge or pain during sex are reasons to be seen soon. Sudden, severe pain or fainting means calling 911, not driving to urgent care. In Downers Grove, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital runs the emergency department at 3815 Highland Ave.

HPV screening near Downers Grove

HPV screening is part of cervical cancer screening for women, not a stand-alone STD test. The CDC explains that there is no test to learn a person’s overall HPV status. HPV tests are used to screen for cervical cancer in women 30 and older, and they are not recommended for men, teens or women under 30. Women 30 and over can ask about a Pap test, an HPV test or both, MedlinePlus adds.

We offer women’s health visits. Call (630) 914-5373 to ask whether a Pap or HPV test can be part of one before you drive over.

Paying for STD testing with insurance or self-pay

Your cost comes down to your insurance plan and the tests the provider orders. We accept Aetna, Cigna, Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, UnitedHealthcare, Humana and Illinois Medicaid plans, including HFS, Meridian, CountyCare, Molina and YouthCare. Call to confirm your specific plan before the visit.

If you have no coverage or prefer to keep this visit off your insurance, choose self-pay; your charge then covers the visit and the tests done. Call (630) 914-5373 for current self-pay pricing.

Questions and answers

Questions we hear often

Still not sure? Call (630) 914-5373 and we will help you decide.

Where can I get STD testing in Downers Grove, IL?

Pioneer Physicians Urgent Care tests for STDs at its Bolingbrook clinic, about 16 minutes from downtown Downers Grove by car, not in the village itself. Testing for common STIs is confidential and offered seven days a week. We’re open 8 AM to 8 PM, and walk-ins are welcome.

Can I get STD screening if I have no symptoms?

Yes. You need neither symptoms nor an appointment to be screened. The CDC notes that many STIs cause no symptoms, so testing is the only way to know for sure. Tell the provider what worries you and when you last tested.

How long do STD test results take?

It depends on the test. Some come back the same day, while blood and other samples sent to an outside lab take longer. Before you leave, the provider can tell you which results to expect today and how you will hear about the rest.

Can men be tested for HPV?

Not with a routine screening test. The CDC does not recommend HPV tests to screen men, and it notes that a provider can usually diagnose genital warts just by looking at them. If you notice warts, sores or other skin changes, come in for an exam.

Is STD testing free?

It depends on your coverage and the tests ordered, so check with your insurer before the visit. Self-pay, which covers the visit plus the tests, is open to anyone who’d rather not use insurance. Call (630) 914-5373 for current self-pay pricing.

Do you offer STD testing near Woodridge, IL?

Yes, at our Bolingbrook clinic. We have no Woodridge office, but Woodridge is about 11 minutes away, and the drive from Downers Grove crosses Woodridge on Hobson Road and IL 53. Walk-ins are welcome every day, or you can book online.

Will anyone else find out about my results?

Your results belong to a confidential medical record. Illinois law requires positive STI results to be reported to public health and keeps those reports strictly confidential, with narrow exceptions such as your consent. If a parent or spouse holds your insurance, ask the plan how it sends claim statements, or choose self-pay for the visit.
