11,063 chlamydia and 3,280 gonorrhea cases reported

Why testing matters even when you feel fine

Most of these infections are quiet. The CDC says chlamydia often has no symptoms but can still cause serious health problems. In women, untreated chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which can scar the fallopian tubes and cause infertility or an ectopic pregnancy. MedlinePlus notes that gonorrhea often has no symptoms either, so it can pass to a partner without anyone knowing.

These infections are common in the suburbs around Lemont. Illinois Department of Public Health figures for 2022 show 11,063 chlamydia cases, 3,280 gonorrhea cases and 160 cases of primary and secondary syphilis in the suburban area served by the Cook County Department of Public Health, and Lemont is one of the suburbs that department serves.

For people without symptoms, the CDC recommends a chlamydia test every year for sexually active women under 25, and for women 25 and older who have a new partner or several partners, or whose partner has an STI. MedlinePlus lists yearly gonorrhea screening for women under 25, men who have sex with men, and people living with HIV.

What happens at your testing visit

At the front desk, hand over a photo ID. Bring your insurance card too, unless you plan to pay for yourself. A provider then talks with you in private about any symptoms, recent partners and your last test, and suggests which tests fit. We test for common STIs. If you are after one particular test, call (630) 914-5373 before you leave Lemont to ask about it.

The sample depends on the test. MedlinePlus explains that a gonorrhea test uses either a first-catch urine sample or a swab, and that gonorrhea and chlamydia are often tested together because people commonly have both. For the urine test, it says not to urinate for two hours beforehand. Any test that needs blood is drawn here, and the sample goes to an outside lab.

Some tests give results the same day. Samples sent to the outside lab take longer, and the wait varies by test. Before you head home, ask which answers you will learn at the visit and how you will get the others.

Privacy and the Cook County health department

Everything from the visit goes into your confidential medical record. At check-in, tell us the phone number or address you want us to use, especially if you share a phone or mailbox at home.

Illinois also has a public health rule worth knowing about. When a test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis or HIV is positive, the result must be reported to the local health department, and the state’s reportable disease list says all reports are confidential. For Lemont, that department is the Cook County Department of Public Health.

How much STD testing costs at urgent care

There is no single price. What you pay turns on your insurance and the tests you have. If you pay on your own, you are charged for the visit and for each test. For today’s self-pay rates, phone (630) 914-5373, and our page on paying without insurance explains how it works. If you share a plan with a parent or spouse, self-pay is an option too.

Plans we take include Humana, Cigna, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and Medicare. On the Illinois Medicaid side, we accept HFS, CountyCare, Meridian, Molina and YouthCare. Call to confirm your specific plan before you set out from Lemont.

CountyCare deserves a note for Lemont. The plan is open only to HealthChoice Illinois members who live in Cook County, and Lemont is one of the suburban Cook County villages, so Lemont residents enrolled in HealthChoice Illinois are eligible for it.

If a test comes back positive

If a result is positive, the provider explains what it means and what the next step is. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are both curable: the CDC says the right treatment can cure chlamydia, and MedlinePlus says antibiotics can cure gonorrhea.

Plan on a follow-up test. The CDC advises testing again about three months after chlamydia treatment, even when your partners were treated too, because a new infection can happen. Partners should get tested as well, since many people with these infections have no symptoms.

Questions and answers

Questions we hear often

Still not sure? Call (630) 914-5373 and we will help you decide.

Can urgent care do STD testing?

Yes, ours does, any day we are open, and testing can be the whole reason for your visit. A provider talks with you privately, helps choose the tests and collects the samples they need. Some results come the same day, and blood samples go to an outside lab for testing.

Is there STD testing in Lemont, IL?

We do not have a Lemont office. Our clinic is in Bolingbrook, about 14 minutes from downtown Lemont by Lemont Road and I-55. We’re open 8 AM to 8 PM every day, and walk-ins are welcome. Testing is confidential, and you can use insurance or pay on your own.

How much is STD testing at urgent care?

There is no flat price, because your plan and your tests set the cost. With insurance, ask your plan what it covers for STD screening. Self-pay is available, and the bill covers the visit plus each test you have. Prices are not listed on our website, so phone (630) 914-5373 and ask for the current self-pay pricing.

Can I walk in for STD testing on a weekend?

Yes. Saturday and Sunday follow the weekday schedule of 8 AM to 8 PM, and walk-ins are welcome on weekends too. To lock in a time instead, save your spot online before you leave Lemont. Once we close, you can still book a slot for the next day.

When will my STD test results be ready?

Certain tests give same-day answers. Lab send-outs take longer, and turnaround varies by test. Before leaving, ask which results you will learn at the visit and how the rest will be shared with you. After chlamydia treatment, the CDC advises testing again in about three months.

Does a positive STD test get reported to anyone?

Yes. Positive results for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV must be reported to the local health department under Illinois rules, which for Lemont means the Cook County Department of Public Health, and the state says those reports are confidential. Otherwise, results stay in your confidential medical record. If you share an insurance plan, you can choose self-pay.

Do you accept CountyCare?

Yes, we take CountyCare along with the other Illinois Medicaid plans on our list. The plan is limited to HealthChoice Illinois members who live in Cook County, and Lemont is a suburban Cook County village. Benefits differ from member to member. Call to confirm your specific plan at (630) 914-5373 before making the trip.
